Vaadin migration: Framework 6/7/8 onto Flow 25
Most Vaadin Framework 6/7/8 applications are business software that cannot stop for a rewrite. I carry them over to Vaadin Flow 25 incrementally, with the application live in production the whole way. I have done this since 2014, and I now take it on independently from Berlin.
What I migrate
- I move Framework 6/7/8 applications onto Flow 25, including Vaadin 7 code bases on OSGi and Apache Karaf.
- I bring Swing, SWT and Struts front ends onto Flow.
- I update Flow applications that have fallen several major versions behind, and keep them current after that.
How I work
- I start with proofs of concept on your own code, then recommend whether to carry it forward or rebuild.
- I migrate view by view, so users keep working on the application throughout.
- I re-architect where the old structure blocks the move, for example to MVP, and break oversized classes into reusable parts.
- I use tool-assisted migration where it pays off. I was the first to use Vaadin's Dragonfly tooling on a real project.
Where migrations stall
The components are rarely the hard part. I get called for the rest:
- I connect single sign-on, with Keycloak or Entra ID, and Spring Security.
- I add real-time collaboration and fix threading problems.
- I find session-data leaks and the missing listener deregistration behind them, and set up a content security policy.
- I replace discontinued add-ons and Feature Pack widgets, and fix accessibility.
Migrations I have carried
- For a global truck manufacturer, I migrated a ~100,000-line financial-planning platform from Vaadin 8 to Flow, live in production throughout, and kept it current to 25.
- For a maker of regulated active implants, I carried a Vaadin 7 → 24 migration end-to-end, including an MVP re-architecture and Spring Security.
- For a B2B integration software vendor with about 44 Vaadin 7 applications on OSGi, I built two proofs of concept and recommended carrying the code forward instead of rebuilding it.
- For a mid-market ERP vendor, I held one mentoring day a month for five years.
Ways to work with me
- I run a feasibility study with proofs of concept on your code.
- I carry out the migration, alone or together with your team.
- I mentor a team that migrates on its own, on regular days.
- I get a stalled migration moving again.
